Why does it cost so much money for the upkeep of the Magog Down?

There are many of us who enjoy the unique spaces that the Magog Down has to offer, from the views, soaking in the peace and quiet, walking, bird watching, to simply taking advantage of the dog walking facilities.  What we may not fully appreciate is that the Down is looked after by a small group of trustees and volunteers who carefully monitor where the money comes from and what it is spent on.  As the incoming Treasurer, I thought that it would be useful to explain in a bit more detail where our money comes from and how much we have to spend.
 
Annually, we receive income of around £90,000 to maintain the Down and spend between £85,000 and £110,000, depending on the maintenance schedule and our plans for the year.  Last year [2012-13] – a very busy year – saw us bring in £87,375 and spend £106,481. To help us understand where the money goes we split the income and costs into three activity streams which are:
 
Land Management.  
This represents our farming and conservation activities.  Since the Trust began, we have had a series of stewardship agreements which provide a steady income in return for providing free public access to our land and enhancing its conservation value by restoring chalk downland, creating new woodland and recreating other habitats to restore the diversity of flora and fauna on Magog Down.  In the last financial year (2012/2013) we generated £57,632 in income for land management.  However, a very busy year – which included the reshaping of our woodland to protect our Scheduled Ancient Monument and the maintenance of fencing – meant that our land expenditure was £77,297.

Community Liaison. 
This includes the membership and community activities of the Magog Trust.  These activities are wholly charitable in that they relate to our access and educational objectives.  We aim to break even on these activities.  Last year membership brought in £7,497, a very much appreciated, significant and useful part of our income.  The dog walkers amongst us are not forgotten and we spent £3,837 last year in dog bin clearance.

Corporate. 
This includes the finance and administration functions of the Trust and the management of our expendable endowment, which was set up following receipt of a very generous legacy.  Last year our Investment Income was £18,840, with donations, grants and other income amounting to a further £3,406.  This income covers the cost of the Ranger Service that we buy from Cambridge Past, Present and Future, which last year was £13,817. 

I hope that this gives you a bit of insight into how the Magog Trust is financed and next time you use the Down and notice the new fences, the grass that has been cut, the dog walking areas managed, or the hedges and trees that have been maintained, you may have a clearer picture of where the money comes from.

In 2011 the re-designed website was launched, and so the decision was taken to stop producing these Newsletters, and instead to use this website as the main means of communication for news and articles of interest.

This move away from a regular Newsletter meant that more of the Members' and Friends' subscriptions could be spent directly on the costs of upkeep and husbandry on the Down.
