Flower of the Month (September) – Carline Thistle (Carlina vulgaris)

The Carline Thistle has distinctive yellow/brownish flowers which can be seen from July to October.  The flower head has two halos of bracts, the outer ring with long pale buff-grey bracts which fold inwards in wet weather.  It grows in short grassland, often on dry, chalk soils.
