Tribute to founding Trustee Joan Barnes

It is with great sadness that I pass on the news that Joan Barnes died early yesterday morning, 1st November.  She was approaching her 95th birthday.  Joan had been ill for some time and had been in a coma at Arthur Rank Hospice.

Joan, and her husband Ray, were instigators in the project to buy the land, later to become Magog Down. Along with Christopher South and Colin Davison, she was a founding Member of The Magog Trust.  As Chairman of the Parish Council at the time, she was able to involve many in the community and beyond, in fund raising and with others, in obtaining grants and approaching the business world of Cambridge.

She gave tirelessly to the events that were held both on the Down and around the county persuading others to become involved.  She and Ray have a lasting memorial on Magog Down in Barnes’ Copse, which was created in 2014 by planting a number of trees in the sheep paddocks to provide shade.

The funeral will take place at St Mary’s Church, Great Shelford, on Monday 15th November 2021 at 10am followed by interment in Stapleford Cemetery. No flowers please, but donations if wished for Arthur Rank Hospice Charity may be sent c/o H. J. Paintin Ltd, 43 High Street, Linton, Cambridge CB21 4HS.
